Watches
Watches were first worn in 16th century Europe. These were not your standard wrist watch and were usually fastened to you clothing or worn around the neck with a chain. They did not have glass covers and were usually covered by a hinged brass cover.
In 1657, the invention of the balance spring made the timepieces more accurate for keeping time. Prior to the addition of the balance wheel, sharp or abrupt movements could make the timepiece skip and not keep accurate time.

Today, the most expensive watches such as Rolex use mechanical movements and are powered by tiny precision springs. These types of watches are truly a work of art and most watches of this caliber are all hand made.
The average watch, the most people use are made to keep time with quartz movements. While these watches are not that expensive, due to the advance technology, some of them are really nice watches and keep very accurate time.
